Another day at work for a Technical Support Engineer

Company or Industry: IT Software Company
Salary: $50000 / Year

People have different shifts on this job, I'm on the second shift, so I get to go in a little bit late (around 10 am), but I can't leave until after it gets dark, typically until after 7pm.

9:30 I wake up, get dressed.

9:45 Outside waiting for my ride. This nice person from work has agreed to give me a ride every morning. (Thank god, saves me 30 minutes of horrifying bus wait and commute)

9:59 I step into the office. Downside of getting a ride from someone is that you follow whatever schedule they're on. Damn guy's always late or cutting it really close. What can I say, can't complain, since I'm just a free loader.

10:00 I'm at my desk. Sit my stuff down, turn computer on. Off to get water or tea.

10:15 Back at my desk, check emails. Glance through all the messages, then figure out which ones to focus on first.

10:30 Arrrgh, phone rings, customer calls, this is when the "support" part of the work begins. I pick up, say the typical non sense lines the company has drilled into my head. Ya know...the "Thank you for calling xxx, please let me know your account number. Verify the following for me please." After the customer patiently provides you with all the correct information, you fake a kind voice and say "Now how may I help you today?"

11:00 Still on the phone with that irritating idiot. Nice person and all, but so slow!!! I try and try and try to explain one simple thing, she does not get it!

11:15 Still on the phone but ready to bang head on keyboard to relieve frustration. (oh noo nooo...can't do that yet, it's so early, got to save that for later on in the day)

11:20 Phone call ends. Off to bathroom, then get more water. Throat burning from all the talking.

11:45 Hungry, messages fellow workers on ideas to get for lunch.

12:00 Off to lunch! As always, the excellent selection across the street (MacDonalds, Burger King, Panda Express, Sushi Queen, etc)

1:00 Back to desk. Gotta time it right. Working as a phone support person means you gotta follow your shift time down to the minute. Damn it, management will kill if I miss a precious phone call from that oooh so dear customer.

1:15 Arrgh, phone rings again, it's that beloved customer you chatted with yesterday. They've returned with another problem.

1:25 Hangs up phone. Time to visit bathroom.

2:00 Email comes in from your Tech. Lead with a couple of god damn customer issues (or Cases as they are professionally referred to)

3:00 Typing and sending emails like crazy. At least I can type fast.

4:00 Ahh...this day is going by sooo slowly.

4:30 Another phone call comes in.

6:00 People from the earlier shift leaves. I say my goodbyes and then curses for having to stay longer myself.

7:00 Aha! Finally, the end of the day. I turn off the work phone with a sign of relief. Find my kind coworker and beg for ride home.
