The responsibilities of a Business Analyst varies greatly from company to company, but down to the core of it all, it's always about going to meetings and writing documents. If you're not a people's person, this job really isn't for you, but if you like to meet and discuss business with people from different departments, then it might be a fun job for ya.
This is what a typical day is like for me:
7:30 am Time to get up. It's been a little bit easier after the Day Light Savings time change, but I swear, this is always one of the most difficult times of the day.
7:45 am I snooze the alarm for the third time, still in bed, now feeling even more miserable.
7:47 am I'm up. Well..more like my body has morphed itself into a robot and has sat up by mechanical nature. (the brain and all other sensory functions are still soundly asleep)
7:50 am I panic like crazy while getting dressed and washed up for work. I'm late, yes, late for my bus, my train and my work.
7:55 am I dash outside of the apartment, push elevator button and waits impatiently.
8:00 am Downstairs, watching my bus passing by 20 feet ahead of me. (with tears in my eyes)
8:15 am Another bus is here. The wonderful start of the day called "commute" has begun.
9:25 am I made it to work. Missed 9:15 daily status meeting, what the heck. I attempt to tip toe pass the manager's office to get to my desk. But ooooh noooo, it's never that easy...."Goodmorning, can you come over here for a minute?" She says, in a voice and tone that reminds me of Raymond's elderly and nagging mother from Everyone Loves Raymond the tv show.
9:30 am I drop my things at my desk and then walk over to the manager's desk with my notepad.
9:45 am Walk back to my desk with a long list of "to-dos".
10:00 am Usual daily bathroom and coffee break.
10:30 am Launch Microsoft word and begin to type up a document that will specify what the new product's requirements are. (waits for slow computer to react, then opens a couple more other documents for reference)
11:30 am Happily typing away until I see manager walking over here, should have heard her high heels drumming into the ground if my headphones weren't in. Looks up, gets ready for more work.
12:30 pm Still typing the new document manager just instructed to do, getting really hungry but forgot to pack lunch to work.
12:45 pm Too hungry to keep working, I close Microsoft Word, making sure to save it by pressing the save button twice.
12:55 pm Outside of work, trying to decide what to get for lunch. I settled on a subway sandwich. (cheap and fast)
1:45 pm Done eating, also finalized two documents. Drafting up an email kindly asking 20 people to review the documents and provide feedbacks.
1:55 pm Grab note book, head to meeting room, need to discuss with the engineers on the design concepts.
3:00 pm Back at desk, getting very sleepy...time for afternoon coffee break.
3:30 pm Resume writing with Microsoft Word, also open up Microsoft Visio try drawing a business flow diagram. (you don't get to use too many advanced techie softwares, even though I have a computer science degree, haven't really used any softwares for work outside of the microsoft office suite)
4:00 pm Co-worker drops by to check on updates for a couple of things. Discusses briefly, promised co-worker to do more work and send out more documents for him.
4:30 pm Glancing through email box, replying to anything that I neglected or put on the back burner earlier in the morning.
5:00 pm Most people are starting to leave the office. I feel I shouldn't leave so early since I came in late...but arrrrgh, really can't look at this boring document any longer. I glance at the manager office, she's still there...
5:15 pm Manager gets up, probably off to the bathroom or another meeting. I take the opportunity to pack up and escapes office.
5:30 pm On the bus home, feeling exhausted yet didn't do anything other than sitting and typing all day. (reminds self to go to gym tomorrow....yea right)
