Another day at work for a High School Teacher

Company or Industry: Humber Institute
Salary: $45000 a year

My whole family has always been in the education business. My grandfather taught biology at a community college, my mom teaches French part time and my dad is a Physics professor.

When I went to school, teaching was the last thing on my mind. I wanted to be a doctor or perhaps a computer programmer. Anything to stay away from the boring teaching field.

Unfortunately, life is tough. At graduation, I had no job offers. There was this Education career fair, I went and landed this high school teaching job. (I learned a college degree was all you needed to teach at the high school level, for university though, a PHD is required)

Excellent, I have entered a career path where the highest point I will ever reach is the head boss for a whole bunch of kids.

As I've always been good with calculations, I chose Math as my primary subject.

I teach 9th grade math. It's amazing how little some kids know in the 9th grade. Of course there are always the gifted ones who ace all the exams, as well as the annoying ones who point out all the mistakes you make on the blackboard. After two months here, I developed a sense of patience.....for better or worse....I can now tolerate an entire class without needing to storm out and do breathing exercises in order to calm down.

My day is typically the same, you stick to the same schedule as all the classe.

7:30 Get in to school, do a little of preparation work.

7:40 Head to first class

9:00 Break

10:15 Second class

12:00 Lunch

1:00 Grade papers

2:00 Office hours

3:00 Head home

There are good days and bad days. I do feel happy when the students show they've learned something, most of the time though, I feel the pain of having to deal with immature young kids.

Not sure how long I can last in this job......

I do enjoy the vacations. The biggest bonus as a teacher. :)

In your opinion, how do most people get a high paying job?
