I only work on weekends and occasionally week nights.
This is what my day at work would be like on a Saturday.
9 am Alarm clock goes off. I force myself to get up.
9:15 am I walk the dog around the neighborhood for 5 minutes, he enjoys short brief walks. (In other words, he's too lazy for long walks)
9:30 am I get ready for work. In this line of business, there's no need to wear pretty clothes. It's going to get splattered with oil and hot sauce anyhow.
10 am I'm at work. Boss and a couple other cooks greet me. By the way, the boss is a cook himself. These Chinese restaurants all seem to be ran families. The younger chef claims to be the boss' brother in law.
10:15 am Boss walks over to talk to me. No customers this early on a Saturday. I've been told to translate a page of hand-written menu from Chinese to English. (darn, if only I remembered more words from that Chinese class)
11 am Phone rings for the first time. I answer my very first take-out order of the day. "Yes. Let me read your order back to you to confirm:
That's one shrimp fried rice, one beef and eggplant, and 2 cans of pop. This will take about 20 minutes. Thank you."
11:30 am - 2:00 pm This is peak time for lunch orders. Phone is ringing every few minutes. I take orders, write them down, then shout it back to the kitchen. When customers arrive to pick up orders, my job switches from call taker girl to cashier girl.
2:30 pm Starving but cooks are getting ready to bring out the food for lunch.
2:45 pm Eats lunch with a couple of cooks. Free food on Weekends are always good. Since the cooks are eating this food themselves, you feel safe about the quality too.
3:30 pm Clean up the dishes and then back to work post. (I stand behind the counter you see after you come into the door)
4:00 pm Phone orders start to come in for dinner. Same routine, answer phone, write down orders, shout orders to kitchen.
5:00 pm to 9:00 pm Busy with dinner orders. When have a moment of free time, snack on spring rolls.
9:30 pm Free dinner is served.
10:00 pm I'm packing to go home. The restaurant opens until 2 am, but I usually leave early. (Parents do not like it if I stay out too late)
